Medication Dispensing

Patient-specific medication dispensing – from prescription to dispensed dose

Designed for hospital pharmacies and community multidose pharmacies in the Nordics and expanding European markets, where dispensing automation meets clinical oversight and national regulatory integration.

The Challenge

Dispensing automation is often tied to specific hardware, with a critical gap between clinical prescribing & machine execution

Machine-led solutions can leave pharmacies managing different systems as equipment changes or mixed fleets are introduced. The bigger difficulty is translating prescriptions written in clinical terms into the exact product, cassette and production instructions machines need – accurately, consistently and at scale.

Our SOLUTION

Atlas connects clinical review, dispensing & traceability across clinical systems and dispensing technologies

Atlas integrates with hospital EPRs, national e-prescription infrastructure, drug catalogues and financial systems, allowing organisations to retain flexibility over their dispensing equipment while maintaining one consistent workflow from prescription through production and billing.

Core Capabilities

Practical functionality for day-to-day operations

Dispense Planning

Selects the right product for each dose, substitution rules, strength and form conversions, pouch-grouping logic – before any order reaches a machine. Clinical decisions separated from hardware execution

Smart Clinical Review

The comparison against the previous dispense filters away unchanged items, so pharmacists focus their attention on new prescriptions, modifications and stops rather than working through the full medication list every cycle

Logistical Review

Stock levels and low-stock items surfaced before dispensing begins – preventing avoidable mid-run interruptions that clinical review alone cannot catch.

Hardware-agnostic Execution

Atlas generates one hardware-agnostic dispense message. Thula’s integration module translates it per machine vendor. Change hardware or run mixed fleets without changes to the clinical layer.

System Integration

Connects to hospital EPRs, eMed & other medication card systems, national e-prescription infrastructure, drug catalogues, patient identity registries and financial systems via OIDC authentication and HL7-based messaging.

Closed-Loop Traceability

Results of full integration: dispensing confirmations, errors and material usage feed back to the prescription source and financial systems – closing the loop from prescription through to billing.

Solution Impact

Practical benefits, built on a consistent foundation

Different dispensing environments bring different operational demands. As requirements change, Atlas keeps the underlying platform, clinical-review approach and traceability consistent.

Versatility

Atlas supports high-volume community pharmacy pouch
dispensing against medication cards as well as just-in-time hospital inpatient unit-dose workflows on the same platform.

Efficiency

Dispensing is verified and planned in minutes rather than
hours. Logistical review surfaces stock and machine readiness before a run starts – cutting mid-run interruptions.

Governance

Closed -loop traceability from prescription through to billing – dispensing confirmations, errors and material usage feedback to the prescription source and financial system.

Why Atlas

A closer look at why Atlas works for healthcare organisations

Safety by design

Clinical warnings surface automatically in Atlas. Interaction alerts, allergy flags and dose validation are applied during the dispensing pipeline rather than depending on a manual check at the point of transcription.

No hardware lock-in

Machine vendors typically bundle the clinical workflow with their hardware. Atlas separates them – the integration module absorbs the vendor protocol, leaving the clinical layer stable regardless of which machines are in use.

Proven in live production

The same Atlas codebase runs a national multidose pharmacy and a hospital pharmacy enterprise, not as separate products. One clinical-review engine, validated at production scale in both settings.
